Vigilance Committee

Vigilance Committee

What is the Vigilance Committee?

The Vigilance Committee is a protective platform for women and children that functions continuously and vigilantly at the local level to ensure their rights, physical and mental well-being, and life safety, and to prevent violence, violations of rights, and social discrimination against them.

Vigilance Committees work immediately on issues that require urgent intervention at the local level to provide a protective mechanism. The Committees can also take up cases and issues that have been neglected due to the absence of various committees and can function by utilizing the legal protections and support systems available to women and children.

Objectives

  • Protect the rights of women and children and ensure strong interventions and necessary arrangements for redressal against any violence, discrimination, injustice, exploitation, or denial of their rights.

  • Receive any complaint involving women and children and provide solutions through immediate interventions or support mechanisms.

  • Forward complaints and issues that cannot be resolved by the Vigilance Committee to the District Vigilance Committee, Women's Commission, other government mechanisms, and legal aid agencies, and ensure that the results of subsequent actions reach the grassroots level.

  • Coordinate government-level agencies and schemes for the protection of the rights of women and girls. Coordinate the activities of other agencies working towards similar objectives with the Vigilance Committee and facilitate joint action.

  • Implement activities to create a social environment in which women and children are free from all forms of problems and violence.

  • Form various groups and utilize people's participation and community-based mechanisms to achieve the objectives.

  • Provide social monitoring and support for women and child welfare activities in situations involving abuse and exploitation.
