🛕 Thrippuliyoor Mahavishnu Temple

A Divya Desam temple known as “Bheemasena Tirupati.”

Thrippuliyoor Mahavishnu Temple is one of the ancient and prominent temples among the 108 Vaishnava Divya Desams in India and is also one of the Pancha Pandava Temples. Located about four kilometres southwest of Chengannur on the route to Mavelikara, this temple is also famous as “Bheemasena Tirupati.”

The main deity of the temple is Lord Mahavishnu in the form of Narasimha, represented as a fierce manifestation. Thrippuliyoorappan resides here facing east, with a powerful and majestic appearance, having four arms. The important sub-deities worshipped in the temple include Lord Ganesha, Ayyappa, Lord Shiva, Koovalathappan, Yakshiyamma, Nagas (serpent deities), and Rakshas (guardian deity).

The temple is renowned for its beautiful wall paintings and intricate wooden sculptures and attracts numerous devotees and pilgrims from within Kerala and other parts of India.

The temple conducts five daily poojas and three Sheevelis (processions). Palpayasam (a sweet milk offering) is the main offering at the temple. Vaikunta Ekadashi and Thiruvonam are the major festivals celebrated here. Every year, a ten-day annual festival (Kodiyettu Utsavam) is conducted during the Malayalam month of Makaram. The festival begins with the flag hoisting ceremony on the Atham day and concludes with the Aarattu ceremony in the Pamba River on the Thiruvonam day.

The Kavadiyattam held on the day of Makara Sankranti, featuring more than a thousand Kavadis, is one of the most famous attractions of this temple. It is considered to be the only Vishnu temple where Kavadiyattam is performed. Another unique feature of this temple is the traditional art form Velakali, which is performed only in a few temples across Kerala and is also famous here.

Pazhayattil Devi Temple

Pazhayattil is one of the important regions and temple centres in Puliyoor Grama Panchayat, located in Chengannur Taluk of Alappuzha District. This place has been known for centuries as a centre of spiritual faith and cultural heritage.

The Pazhayattil Devi Temple, belonging to Perissery Idamana Madam, has Vanadurga Devi, a self-manifested deity (Swayambhu), as its main deity. Surrounded by nature, this temple is an important centre of devotion and faith for devotees.

The Makara Sankrama Kavadiyattam, one of the most significant religious and cultural celebrations in the Puliyoor region, begins from the Pazhayattil Devi Temple. After observing a rigorous 41-day fasting and devotional practice, devotees carry Kavadis from this temple and proceed in a spiritually vibrant procession to the Thrippuliyoor Mahavishnu Temple.

Apart from religious rituals and festivals, the Pazhayattil Devi Temple plays a significant role in the social and cultural life of the local community. Blending rural heritage with spirituality, this temple remains one of the important cultural symbols of Puliyoor.

⛪St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church, Puliyoor

A historic monument of faith and tradition

St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church, located in Puliyoor of Chengannur Taluk in Alappuzha District, is a symbol of faith, tradition, and spiritual heritage. The history of this church reflects the long-cherished dream and spiritual dedication of the earlier generations of Puliyoor, Cheriyanad, and Ala regions.

Historical records indicate that during the period when there was no independent parish in these areas, the faithful depended on Chengannur Old Syrian Church and Edavankad Church to participate in the Holy Qurbana and other religious services.

With the aim of establishing a new parish through divine grace, the forefathers worked together with dedication. Sri. Oommen Philipose and Sri. Cherian approached Sri. Kesava Karnavar requesting land for the construction of a new church. Sri. Kesava Karnavar generously donated forty cents of land without accepting any compensation. The ownership document of the land was registered in the names of Sri. Kochummen Oommen (Kannimel, Ala and Cheriyanad), Sri. Geevarghese (Thazhvanamala, Puliyoor), and Sri. Mathai (Keralavakkayil, Ala).

On 29 March 1896, on Palm Sunday, the first Holy Qurbana was celebrated in this church by Joseph Kasseesa Kottooreth, Thomas Kasseesa Kottarathil, and Koshy Kasseesa Vaidyanveetil.

Later, on 9 January 1919, the renovated Holy Altar (Madbaha) was dedicated by His Grace Titus II Mar Thoma Metropolitan and Abraham Mar Thoma Suffragan Metropolitan.

Over the years, the church expanded and underwent several renovations. On 26 February 2005, the newly reconstructed church building was consecrated under the leadership of His Grace Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom Mar Thoma Metropolitan, Dr. Joseph Mar Irenios Suffragan Metropolitan, Joseph Mar Barnabas Episcopa, and Rev. Dr. K. U. Abraham Ramban.

Today, St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church serves as an important centre for spiritual activities, social service, educational initiatives, and charitable programmes. The church continues to make valuable contributions to the spiritual growth of believers and the unity and welfare of the community.
